how to reheat a burrito

Burrito is arguably the best food created by humans. One crunchy bite will introduce your taste buds to a variety of fantastic flavors that your tongue and stomach will forever be thankful for. A great thing about this Mexican dish is the fact that its leftovers can be stored to be eaten at a later date. There is nothing wrong with that as long you know how to reheat a burrito properly. However, most people do not know how to reheat a burrito.

In this article, you will learn the fine art of reheating a burrito properly, i.e., so it does not come out a soft and soggy mess.

The great thing about a burrito is that you can put just about anything in it. Rice, beans, cheese, sour sauce, chicken- the list keeps going on and on.

Before we go on with the tutorial, let us take a look at a few of the several types of burritos.

  • Chipotle: Chipotle has spent years perfecting their burrito recipe. This is why it is an all-American variant. It is made using a combo of white rice and black beans, barbacoa, tomato salsa, guacamole, garlic, and cumin.
  • Chimichanga: Chimichangas are the game changers when it comes to burritos. This type of burrito is a native of the desert of Arizona. This is the true American Burrito.
  • Taco Bell: Taco Bell burrito is another American favorite, and one fascinating thing about this burrito is the way prepared. Most burritos are prepared using deep frying. However, it is the use of the grill that makes the Taco Bell burrito stand out.
  • Breakfast Burrito: The breakfast burrito is made using some of the essential breakfast ingredients. The fillings usually consist of a combo of eggs, potatoes, and sausage.

How to Reheat a Burrito

1, Using an Oven Toaster

Using an oven toaster is perhaps the best way to reheat a burrito. Not only is it fast and convenient, but you will also be able to determine how much crunch you want on your tortilla. The Chipotle burrito and the Taco Bell variant are best reheated using this method.

  • Step 1: Wrap the burrito in foil so that the top part is only covering the tortilla. The fillings, on the other hand, have to be exposed.
  • Step 2: Set the oven temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Step 3: With the peeled-out top facing upwards, place the burrito in the oven. Keep in mind that you may have to flatten the bottom a little to make the burrito stand upright.
  • Step 4: Allow the burrito to sit inside the oven for 10 to 12 minutes, depending on how hot you want your burrito to be.

Additional note: If you want your burrito to be extra crispy, take the burrito out of the oven after 8 minutes. Peel off the foil. Then let the oven toast it for another 2 to 3 minutes.

2, Using a Grill

If you are an impatient person like me, the idea of using a grill to reheat a burrito may not sit too well with you. Nobody wants to go through the trouble of setting up a grill for the sole purpose of reheating a burrito. But let me tell you this, Grilled Burritos are worth the stress (There is a reason why it is a Taco Bell bestseller!). There is a faster alternative using a nonstick skillet or a griddle. The Taco Bell Burrito is best reheated using this method.

Grilling using an outdoor grill

Note that this method will take a lot of time. I won’t recommend it if you are looking to fix something up to eat quickly.

  • Step 1: Preheat the grill 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Step 2: Remove some foil from one side of the burrito. Place the burrito wrap on the side that is not lit.
  • Step 3: Grill for about 30 minutes.
  • Step 4: Using a spatula, flip the burrito to the other side of the grill. This way, that side can get some grill marks.
  • Step 5: Using a meat thermometer, check the temperature of your burrito. Once it reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit, you are game!

Grilling using a griddle or a skillet

This takes less time than using an actual grill. You will need some vegetable oil for this to work.

  • Step 1: Preheat a vegetable oil sprayed skillet or griddle for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Step 2: Place the wrapped burrito in the center of whichever cookware you use. Then turn the stove to medium heat.
  • Step 3: Press the burrito gently to brown the underside. Heat for 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Step 4: Flip to the other side and do the same thing.

3, Using a Microwave

If you do not know how to reheat a burrito using a microwave, we all know how it will turn out. Most people shy away from this option because the tortillas turn soft and soggy. I do not know if there is anyone in the world who loves there burrito like that. Nonetheless, there is a correct way of reheating a burrito using a microwave. I will show you how, in the next section of the tutorial.

  • Step 1: Expose a burrito from the foil. Sprinkle some water on the exposed part.
  • Step 2: Place the burrito in a container that is microwave safe.
  • Step 3: Set the temperature dial to high and heat for 1 minute.
  • Step 4: Flip the burrito to the other side and do the same thing.
  • Step 5: Flip the burrito sideways. Sprinkle some water on the exposed side and heat both sides for 30 seconds. Then you have the perfect microwave reheated burrito!

4, Using an Oven Toaster and a Stovetop Pan

This method is for the perfectionists who are willing to use more effort and exert more stress to achieve the perfect burrito. It will take your time, but it is worth the hassle. For this to come out, ideally, you have to follow these steps carefully.

  • Step 1: Unwrap your burrito in such a way the fillings and not the tortilla is exposed.
  • Step 2: Place the burrito at the center of the oven and turn the heat up (270 degrees Fahrenheit). Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.  This will heat the burrito heat from the outside in.
  • Step 3: Place the wrapped burrito in a frying pan. Turn the stove to medium heat. Heat for a minute. This will help make the tortilla crusty.
  • Step 4: Flip the tortilla to the other side and heat for a minute. Then you are done.

How to Reheat a Burrito Using Sour Cream or Any other Wet Fillings

Doing this can be quite tricky. If you reheat a burrito with wet fillings poorly, you will come out with a soggy, unflattering result. There are two ways you can do it. The first is to scoop out all the wet fillings in the burrito before heating it. Then, add it after. The other option is to reheat a burrito with the wet fillings in an oven.

There are two things to take note of when reheating a burrito with wet fillings.

  • Make sure the oven is preheated to 225*F
  • Add some extra sour cream on the side when heating is finished

I hope you enjoyed reading the tutorial. Always remember if you are not a patient person, using a grill or an oven toaster and stovetop pan may not be for you. The microwave is a much faster option. However, if you want to use the microwave, follow the steps mentioned in this tutorial like your taste buds depend on it (they do). I will love to see what you think in the comment section below.
